A middle school student from Manchester, New Hampshire was killed and another teen was injured in a car crash Wednesday morning after allegedly stealing a vehicle from a delivery driver, police said.
The driver, a 13-year-old boy, was pronounced dead at a local hospital, Manchester police said. A 14-year-old female passenger was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, Bedford police said Wednesday afternoon. Manchester police reported that the girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The juveniles were not wearing seatbelts, Bedford police said. The pair, both from Manchester, had been ejected from the car in the crash, police said.
Around 12:50 a.m. early Wednesday morning, police had responded to a report of a stolen car near Clifford Avenue in Manchester.
“The victim, a food delivery driver, told officers he had briefly left his 2014 Toyota Corolla unattended. When he returned, the vehicle was gone,” Manchester police said in a statement posted to Facebook.
About an hour later, police said they spotted the car, without its headlights on, traveling on Kenberma Street. The Toyota sped away, and Manchester police said officers began a pursuit, which continued onto the highway.
A supervisor then made the decision to stop pursuing and lost sight of the Toyota, police said.
Police in Bedford, a town over, then responded to the crash at the Kilton Road on-ramp of Route 101 at 1:50 a.m., Bedford Police Chief Daniel Douidi said in a statement.
Bedford police’s investigation shows that the car appeared to be exiting Route 101 when it crashed and rolled over.
The boy attended Southside Middle School, Manchester Superintendent of Schools Jennifer Chmiel confirmed in a statement. The district didn’t comment whether the teen girl is a student.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students, and our thoughts are with those impacted by this motor vehicle accident,” Chmiel said. “In addition to our school based counseling teams, we have brought in additional community resources and grief counselors that will be available at the school.”
The crash is under investigation by the Bedford Police Department Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team, police said.
