A Boston firefighter was transported to the hospital after crews responded to a “heavy fire” on the roof of a downtown office building Wednesday afternoon, the fire department said.
The Boston Fire Department first reported heavy black smoke coming from the roof of 128 Milk St. just before 2 p.m.
A firefighter was “doing a detail” in the area, the department said, so the fire was reported and office workers were then evacuated.

Within 15 minutes, firefighters were able to put out the fire by getting multiple hose lines to the roof, the Boston Fire Department said. The department reported that crews climbed seven stories to get to the roof of the building, which also houses 22 Batterymarch St.
Boston Deputy Chief James Lonergan spoke to reporters at the scene and said one firefighter was transported by emergency medical services.
“Companies made their way up through the stairwells and hooked up to the stand pipes in there and got lines and water on the fire very quickly. They did a great job putting this thing out,” Lonergan said. “If it was a windy day, who knows, this thing could have extended down the street.”
At 3:30 p.m., the fire department said some crews were remaining on-scene to monitor for any hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
