Officials recently recovered the body of a University of New Hampshire student who went missing last November. The body of Alexis Garcia was pulled from Little Bay in Newington, New Hampshire, last Friday, according to police.
Garcia, 24, was last seen on Nov. 21, 2024, in Durham, N.H. As they attempted to conduct a wellness check, police found his empty car parked at the Scammell Bridge rest area on Route 4. Officials determined that the car had been parked there unoccupied for more than 48 hours.
Just before 3:30 p.m. last Friday, Durham police responded to Newington to help identify a body that was found near the shoreline of Little Bay, according to a statement from Deputy Chief David Holmstock. Authorities used “evidence located with the body” to identify Garcia. This was confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Sunday after an autopsy.
There is no suspicion of foul play, according to Holmstock. The investigation has been closed. Officials did not believe foul play was involved at the time of Garcia’s disappearance either.
Garcia was an Illinois native with ties to the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force ROTC, according to police.
“This loss is heartbreaking. Our thoughts are with Alex’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone who knew and cared for him. He was a valued member of our community and will be deeply missed,” UNH Vice President for Student Life Kenneth Holmes said in an email to the school community on Tuesday.
There are no public safety concerns related to Garcia’s death, he said.
