‘Just stay away’: Drivers can expect ‘major’ delays from Mass. Pike construction over the weekend

“This project will significantly impact travelers during this weekend.”

Officials are warning drivers to expect “MAJOR travel impacts” over the weekend on the Mass. Pike around Boston and Worcester as a result of construction on a bridge replacement project at the I-90/I-95 interchange

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said that from 9 p.m. on Friday, May 30 through 5 a.m. on Monday, June 2, I-90 will be down to just one lane in both directions between exits 123 and 125 in Newton and Weston.

The work is part of a $400 million project that involves the replacement of five of the eight bridges at the I-90/I-95 interchange, the rehabilitation of another, and the replacement of the superstructure of the final two.

The work from Friday through Monday is focused on replacing the superstructure of the bridge carrying I-90 over the MBTA.

“While accelerated bridge construction methods will be used to replace the bridge, this project will significantly impact travelers during this weekend,” the department said.

In addition to the lane and speed reductions for vehicle traffic on the Mass. Pike, buses will be replacing trains on the Framingham/Worcester commuter rail line over the weekend.

Highway administrator Jonathan Gulliver told WBZ that more than 100,000 cars typically travel on the highway through the affected area during a weekend day.

He told the station drivers should leave themselves “a lot of extra time” if they have to drive through the work area, stressing that the delays will be “manageable” if 50 percent of the usual traffic is diverted from the construction zone.

“We’re looking for you to just stay away from the area,” Gulliver told WBZ.
