Community members are mourning after a 12-year-old girl fell to her death from a window in Southbridge.
The girl, Arya Lebeau, was identified by friends and family members in various social media posts and through a GoFundMe fundraiser. Authorities have released minimal information about the incident.
Southbridge police and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are leading an investigation into what they are calling an “unattended death.” Reports suggest that a juvenile girl fell to her death from a third-story window Saturday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Worcester DA. The Office of the Massachusetts Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy.
Southbridge police could not be reached for comment Tuesday. No charges have been filed.
A woman identifying herself as Lebeau’s grandmother said in a Facebook post that the girl died while at a friend’s house. An argument, which may have been over a piece of pizza, led to Lebeau falling out of the window and hitting her head. The fall might also have been related to a game of some kind, according to the woman, Dimas Cabrera. Lebeau died around 6:20 a.m. Saturday.
“I cannot express the amount of grief I feel at the loss of my only baby,” Lebeau’s mother, Charlene Cabrera, wrote on the GoFundMe page. “I have no words, but would like to thank every single person, parent and child for reaching out and for your loving support. It is truly beautiful seeing a whole community coming together to support her. I know we will raise enough money to give my baby girl a peaceful rest.”
The fundraiser had garnered more than $12,700 as of Tuesday morning.
Cabrera told WCVB that the incident happened during a sleepover, and that her daughter was kicked.
“Charlene has always been an incredible person and an even more incredible mother. Right now she needs all the love and support we can give,” a friend of Cabrera’s wrote on Facebook.
