A turtle who was the unlucky recipient of a golf ball to the shell at a golf course on Cape Cod is in Cape Wildlife Center’s care and doing well, the center said.

The painted turtle, who lives in one of the course’s water features, was determined to have been struck by a golf ball based on what Cape Wildlife Center described as “an unmistakable divot.”

“After sizing up the injury we are convinced there is only one logical cause,” it said in a Facebook post.

The turtle is still able to move and function as normal despite the crater. X-rays showed the ball missed his spine and vital organs by just centimeters.

“His body has already started to lay down new tissue over the wound which is a great sign,” Cape Wildlife Center said. “This means that this is likely an older injury that he has been compensating with in the wild.”

The turtle will remain in care so his health can be monitored to make sure there are not any complications impacting his ability to survive in the wild.

“Once he gets the all clear, it’s back to the links where we expect he’ll be back on top of his game in no time,” the Center said.
