A lieutenant in the Nahant Fire Department has been placed on paid leave after his arraignment on rape charges this week, according to officials.
Lt. Frank Anthony Pappalardo, 50, pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Essex Superior Court to four counts of rape, two counts of assault and battery on a household or family member, two counts of assault and battery with serious bodily injury, and one count each of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and witness intimidation, the Boston Globe reported.
Pappalardo was ordered held without bail as he awaited a dangerousness hearing. Details about the incidents related to the charges were not immediately available.
In a statement, Nahant Town Administrator Tony Barletta said: “Frank Pappalardo has been placed on administrative leave, with pay, consistent with our collective bargaining agreement. This may change to unpaid leave pending the outcome of a dangerousness hearing expected later this week, as well as an agency review of the matter.”
Barletta said that Pappalardo has been employed full-time in the department since 2004.
In 2022, Pappalardo received the Medal of Valor during the Nahant Fire Department’s 33rd Annual Firefighter of the Year Award after saving the lives of two people in a December 2021 house fire.
