Two students at Bridgewater State University are facing disciplinary action after a video of them saying a racist slur spread on social media.
“Bridgewater State University was sickened to learn that two of our students used deplorable hateful speech in a video that appeared on social media,” university officials said in a statement. “We are actively exploring disciplinary action against the two students.”
In the video, two students are asked to “say something for the vlog” and respond by looking into the camera and saying the n-word.
The original video appears to have been originally posted on TikTok, then deleted. It was reposted on Instagram by the university’s Black Student Union on Wednesday. The student organization condemned the two students and called on Fred Clark, the university’s president, to speak up.
“AND THIS my people, is why we need to stick together and have a place where we feel united, because then we have weak links like this allowing themselves to be racially victimized and basically giving permission and comfort to say these things about us so casually,” the union wrote on Instagram.
The union also called for students to “develop the Black unity and community here in order to increase our numbers and representation.”
The university’s Instagram account commented on the post and said the students would face disciplinary action.
“We are grateful to the members of the BSU community who have either tagged us on social media posts or have emailed the university directly to alert us to this situation,” the university said in the statement to Boston.com.
The university said it would not tolerate racist or discriminatory behavior.
“BSU remains resolved to eliminating all forms of racism, discrimination, bias, xenophobia, and misogyny,” the university said in the statement. “We continue to engage in actions to actualize our values to create a campus community characterized by equity, respect, and compassion that guarantees human rights for everyone.”
