Boston police seized eight scooters and arrested one Mattapan resident as part of a crackdown on what the department described as “unsafe moped and scooter operation” on Boylston Street and throughout Back Bay.
Police said officers on May 15 were working as part of “Operation Safe Scooter” when they arrested Trayvon Tercy, 20, of Mattapan on a charge of receiving stolen property. Police said the 20-year-old was arrested after officers allegedly discovered that the scooter he was driving in a “reckless manner” was stolen.
The scooter was returned to its owner, and Tercy will be arraigned in Boston Municipal Court, according to police.
Eight others were stopped as part of the crackdown on May 15 and issued summons for Boston Municipal Court for a range of motor vehicle violations.
“Officers observed approximately six moped/scooter operators who, upon noticing the police presence, fled the area at high speeds, believed to be operating either outside their license class or in violation of other laws,” the department said of the targeted operation. “Several others were seen quickly changing direction onto nearby streets to avoid contact with law enforcement.”
The department said it will continue traffic safety enforcement operations across the city and urged the public to report motor vehicle violations by calling 911 or contacting their local district station.
