A 4-year-old suffered a gunshot wound to the head early Saturday morning in Lewiston, Maine, and died hours later in the hospital, authorities said.
Emergency personnel responded to an apartment at 93 Pierce St. after a 911 call reporting the incident at about 4:55 a.m., according to Maine State Police. The injured child was then taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where they were pronounced dead at 7:08 a.m.
Police released few details in their initial statement Saturday night. They said an autopsy would be conducted and the incident remained under investigation.
