One dead in early morning crash on I-495 in Chelmsford

The driver had picked up his sister, the passenger, from UMass Amherst.

A fatal crash occurred in the early morning hours on Friday on Route 495 in Chelmsford, Massachusetts State Police reported.

Shortly after 3:25 a.m., troopers responded to a single-car rollover on the northbound lane on 495 near the rest area in Chelmsford.

According to Chelmsford Fire Department Chief Gary Ryan, emergency personnel found the car in the median after it appeared to have struck a guardrail and rolled over.

Chief Ryan said in an email to Boston.com that responders extricated the driver from the car, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The chief wrote that the crash ejected a woman from the car, causing her to suffer traumatic injuries. State police say first responders transported her to Lowell General Hospital.

Chief Ryan wrote that the driver recently picked up his sister, the passenger, from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she is a student and was bringing her back home.

The northbound lanes were closed as investigators worked, and crews cleared the scene. By 7:15 a.m., crews had reopened all lanes of the highway.

The state police say an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

“This was an incredibly tragic incident that deeply affected everyone involved,” wrote Chief Ryan. “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims, and we stand with our responders as they process the emotional impact of today’s sad events.”
