2 horses die in Maine crash

The driver suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

Two horses died Tuesday in a crash in Eddington, Maine, officials said.

A report of the crash on Route 9 came to the Penobscot Regional Communications Center at 2 p.m., according to a statement from the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.

A truck hauling a trailer with the two horses had veered off the road, and the trailer had struck a large tree, according to the statement. The collision led to its detachment from the truck, which continued to move and hit more trees.

The driver had serious but not life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, officials said. First responders and bystanders tried to help the horses, but one died instantly and the other had to be euthanized due to its critical injuries.
