A student at Bentley University in Waltham died unexpectedly Sunday night in a “tragic accident” during a class trip to the Bahamas, university officials said.
Gaurav Jaisingh, an undergraduate from Shrewsbury, accidentally fell from a balcony while on a senior class trip to the Bahamas, the university said in a statement.
At about 10 p.m., Jaisingh was in his Paradise Island hotel room with his roommates when he reportedly fell from an upper-level balcony, the Royal Bahamas Police Force said in a news release. He was later found unresponsive on a lower floor.
Emergency responders took Jaisingh to the hospital, but he died from his injuries on the way there, according to the Royal Bahamas Police Force. Police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
Jaisingh studied finance with a minor in computer information systems at Bentley, according to his LinkedIn profile. He was also an orientation leader, an undergraduate admissions ambassador, and a brother in the Delta Sigma Pi fraternity.
The university will provide resources and counseling for anyone impacted by Jaisingh’s death who needs support, according to the university’s statement. More information will be shared when available “while respecting his family’s privacy,” the school said.
“We share our deepest condolences with Gaurav’s family, friends and loved ones,” the university said. “This is an enormous tragedy for our community.”
Bentley’s undergraduate commencement is scheduled for this weekend.
