A raccoon attacked a man in a Market Basket parking lot in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on Tuesday, officials say.
Portsmouth Police received a report from a third party that a young male was attacked by a raccoon in the vicinity of Market Basket, Sergeant Jordan Wells told Boston.com.
At the scene, the raccoon and the alleged victim were not present when police arrived. However, roughly an hour later, police said they got a call from the man, who was receiving medical care. He is currently in stable condition, police said.
Following the incident, police were not able to locate the raccoon, according to authorities.
There is “no definitive information” confirming that the raccoon was rabid, Wells said.
It is not uncommon to see raccoons in the daytime during the spring, according to Wells. Just earlier this week, police were notified about a potentially rabid raccoon near Hannaford’s.
“This time of year is when you have all the female raccoons that will be out there in the day foraging for food sometimes,” he said. “They can be extremely aggressive.”
