Most of Copley Square Park opened in time for the Boston Marathon last month, but not everyone is pleased with the results.
The $16.9 million project, which broke ground in July 2023, was supposed to be completed by the end of 2024. Instead, the main plaza of the park, a “raised grove,” and the northeastern triangle of the park with seating opened this year.
While a lawn and fountain area is still under construction and set to open in June, some are already disappointed in the new look. The lawn and the fountain will be open in June.

“Did we learn nothing from Government Center?” One Reddit user asked, saying the new park “sucks.”
Mayor Michelle Wu responded to criticisms at an unrelated event, telling WCVB that “It will be a more vibrant, more walkable and more welcoming space for everyone.”
“Copley Square is one of these places where it’s the chance to bring everyone together, whether it’s your first time visiting Boston, or just your spot to have a bit of quiet reflection and sit and take in all the incredible architecture and beauty and community, we wanted it to be everything it could be for all the different groups and people who love it so much,” Wu said.
Josh Kraft, her opponent for mayor this year and the son of Patriots owner Robert Kraft, said it is “grey, soulless and looks like a skateboard park.”
