Springfield man charged with multiple counts of child rape

Angel Soto, 44, was arrested Monday in Hadley.

A Springfield man was arrested Monday in connection with the sexual assault of multiple children, authorities announced Tuesday.

Angel Soto, 44, was arrested in Hadley on Russell Street by members of state and local police, as well as the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, Springfield police said in a statement. The Springfield Special Victims Unit had been investigating Soto after a sexual assault was reported, police said.

“After further investigation and additional victims coming forward, detectives applied for and were granted a warrant for his arrest,” police said.

Soto is facing 25 charges including aggravated rape of a child – five year age difference; assault to rape a child; aggravated rape of a child – ten year age difference (five counts), rape of a child with force under 16 (two counts); indecent assault & battery on a child under 14 (seven counts); indecent exposure (three counts); witness intimidation; open and gross lewdness; and obscene matter to a minor (two counts).

He is also facing motor vehicle charges out of Chicopee District Court, according to police.

Springfield police did not release details on the allegations. 

“Due to the sensitive nature of the case, no further information will be released,” police said.

Soto pleaded not guilty to all charges during his arraignment on Tuesday, court records show. He was ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing and is scheduled to return to court May 7.

An attorney for Soto declined to comment on the case Tuesday evening.
