A child was struck and killed by a school bus Monday afternoon in Hyde Park, Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox told reporters at the scene.
“This is a tragic investigation of a child being struck,” Cox said in a WCVB-TV live broadcast. “We are doing all we can to make sure we investigate.”
The incident occurred at about 2:44 p.m. near 107 Washington St., Officer Mark Marron said. The child was taken to a nearby hospital while the bus driver remained on the scene.
Homicide detectives from the Boston Police Department were investigating at the scene of the crash Monday evening, according to Marron.
“Right now, everyone’s hearts and minds should be with the family affected here,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in the WCVB-TV broadcast. “We will do everything we can to conduct a thorough investigation.”
Some of the children on the bus were also taken to local hospitals and evaluated, Cox said. The bus driver is fully cooperating with the investigation, he said.
“I am completely heartbroken at imagining what this family is experiencing right now,” Mayor Michelle Wu said in the WCVB-TV broadcast. “I hope all of us hug our kids a little tighter tonight and continue to send our prayers and deepest condolences to the family members and all the loved ones of this child.”
