Boy, 9, tying shoes hit by truck in Southbridge

The child sustained severe injuries in the crash, police said.

A 9-year-old boy was severely injured Monday morning when he was struck by a pickup truck in a Southbridge parking lot as, authorities said, he was tying his shoe on his way to school.

Southbridge police said officers responded to the parking lot of Plaza Liquor at 200 Mechanic St. around 8:19 a.m. Officers found the boy suffering from severe injuries to his hip and leg. The child was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester where, police said, he is being treated for his injuries, which are not life-threatening.

Police said investigators determined the 9-year-old boy was walking to school with two other children when he stopped in the parking lot to tie his shoes. He was struck by a pickup truck as it was pulling out of the parking lot.

The driver, a 37-year-old man, was traveling through the parking lot at a slow speed but did not see the bent over child, police said.

Police said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
