Firefighters made a surprising discovery while responding to a vehicle fire on I-91 earlier this week.
On Monday afternoon, fire ruptured a vehicle’s gas tank, spilling gasoline onto the roadway, according to West Springfield Fire Department in a statement. The fuel then began dripping toward storm drains.

After the fire was extinguished, crews said they attempted to divert the fuel, but soon found a dog — not involved with the incident — inside a storm drain.
The dog was safely rescued and brought to a local animal shelter, according to fire officials.
The dog, who had reportedly been missing for over a month, has since been returned to its owner, firefighters said.
The driver of the vehicle involved in the fire, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation, was taken to a local hospital. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, authorities said.
