Authorities are investigating after a woman fell to her death at the Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton on Wednesday afternoon.
State Police said troopers responded to the park just after 2 p.m. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sutton Police Chief Tom Calouro told WCVB the victim is a 49-year-old mother of four from Topsfield who was hiking with three of her children when she fell about 50 to 75 feet off a cliff into the chasm.
“Troopers have secured the scene, and the circumstances of the incident remain under investigation by the State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office,” State Police said in a statement.

Two miles of trails at the state park weave through rock formations including Purgatory Chasm, which is about a quarter of a mile long featuring granite walls reaching as high as 70 feet. The trail is closed during winter because of the resulting slippery and wet conditions.
