The search is continuing for a 4-year-old boy who was last seen in the Merrimack River Saturday evening, officials said.
Members of the Lowell police and fire department responded to the river by the Western Canal near 300 Arcand Drive “immediately” after a 911 call reporting the boy in the water, Lowell police Superintendent Greg Hudon said in a statement.
The police’s preliminary investigation shows that the boy “was quickly pulled by the current into the Merrimack River” around 5:44 p.m. Saturday evening. The investigation into how he ended up in the water is ongoing, police said.
The Lowell police’s drone unit, the Lowell Fire Department’s boats and dive team, the Massachusetts State Police Airwing, Dive Team, and other units, UMass Lowell Police, and Environmental Police have all participated in the ongoing search, Hudon said Sunday.
Crews in Dracut, Methuen, and Lawrence have also searched downstream for the boy, the release said.
Multiple people, particularly children, have drowned in the Merrimack River in recent years. In 2021, an 11-year-old girl died after being pulled from the river, and the a body of 7-year-old girl was found in the river in 2023.
