A 29-year-old Newburyport man was arrested during the predawn hours Wednesday after police say he fell asleep at the wheel on I-495 while driving under the influence and then led responding troopers in a high speed chase down the interstate after he awoke.
Kristopher Cole was charged with failure to stop, operating under the influence of alcohol, and possession of ammunition without an FID, state police said in a statement.
Police said troopers responded around 1:13 a.m. to multiple calls reporting a dark colored vehicle stopped in the middle lane of I-495 south in Lowell. At the scene, troopers allegedly found the driver, later identified by police as Cole, asleep behind the wheel.
Police said while troopers were at the scene “suddenly and without warning” Cole woke up and drove off “to evade police.”
“Troopers observed the operator reach speeds of approximately 100 mph as he continued on Interstate 495 south,” police said.
Troopers used a device to deflate the Newburyport man’s tires, police said.
“After the deflation, the vehicle continued on Interstate 495 South into Bolton at speeds between 34-45 mph,” police said.
Cole’s vehicle stopped around 1:45 a.m. and he was arrested “without further incident,” police said.
Attorney information for Cole was not immediately available.
