A Lynnfield school canceled classes Tuesday after a threatening note was found on campus, according to an email sent to parents.
Lynnfield police officers responded to the Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic School Monday when a note that “involved a threat of gun violence” was discovered, Principal Cynthia Donovan wrote in the email.
Officers extensively searched the school using State Police sniffer dogs but did not find a weapon, according to the email. The alleged threat was found in a school bathroom, and Lynnfield police implemented a lockdown as they investigated, Boston 25 News reported.
“We live in very troubling times when someone can leave an anonymous note to first scare people and then also disrupt our way of life,” Donovan wrote in the email. “Clearly whoever is responsible will need to understand the consequences of their actions. But in my capacity as your principal, I will never shortcut our safety protocols.”
The school was closed Tuesday and will be implementing a one-day re-entry plan Wednesday. The plan requires all students, faculty, and staff entering the building to pass through metal detectors provided by law enforcement, Donovan wrote in a separate email.
The school will also provide additional counselors and comfort animals for any students or staff who may need emotional support, according to the email.
“Our Lady of the Assumption School is a wonderful and enriching faith filled school with students who represent the best and the brightest,” Donovan wrote in an email. “We are blessed to be their teachers, and we thank you for entrusting us with their care.”
