A man was found dead in the Merrimack River Wednesday night in Haverhill, according to the Essex County District Attorney’s Office.
At about 6:35 p.m., a resident of the 50 Island St. Apartments with a view of the river called the Lawrence Police Department and told them they believed a person was being carried down river by the current, the DA’s office said in a statement.
Firefighters from North Andover responded and launched a boat. At about 7:21 p.m., they recovered the deceased man from the river north of the Amazon facility in North Andover, the statement said.
Firefighters estimate that they recovered the man in the Haverhill portion of the river.
The man has not been identified at this time, according to the DA’s office.
State Police are investigating the incident, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death, the DA’s office said.
