Four injured, one critically, after truck overturns in Boston’s Chinatown

The incident appears to be "a tragic accident," Boston Police Commissioner Michael Cox said, but the investigation is ongoing.

Four people were hospitalized after an empty Penske truck appeared to veer off a busy road in Boston’s Chinatown Tuesday afternoon, police said in a press conference.

Boston police responded to Kneeland Street near Harrison Avenue at 12:48 p.m., where officers found the overturned Penske truck and “multiple people” who were struck, Police Commissioner Michael Cox said.

The incident “seems to be more of a tragic accident than anything else. However, it’s still under investigation,” Cox said.

Four people were transported to area hospitals, and one is still in critical condition, Cox said around 4 p.m. Tuesday. Two other people were also impacted by the crash but refused medical treatment. Cox confirmed that the truck’s driver was one of the four people hospitalized. The man was at one point in critical condition but has since stabilized, he said.

Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said at the press conference that, while the investigation is ongoing, there’s no evidence that the incident was intentional.

“We’re thankful that people, other than one person, seem to be doing okay. This easily could have been a far worse circumstance, given the time of day and how many people tend to be in this area at the time,” Hayden said.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said the city “will be in touch with” the businesses affected by the incident and provide support for the neighborhood overall.

“It is quite shocking to see the scene as it stands right now, and the scale of damage from what looks like an accident that occurred,” Wu said at the press conference. “We do have trauma supports available, and they will be in the neighborhood and visiting some of the local businesses and residents.”
