An ICU nurse from Salem Hospital returned home Thursday after being severely injured in an ATV accident during a trip to Thailand a few weeks ago.

Sierra Fairhurst, 23, arrived at Boston Logan Airport on March 27 and went directly to a hospital to be evaluated, where it was determined she did not need inpatient care, according to a GoFundMe page for Fairhurst.

Fairhurst visited the wound clinic and oral maxillofacial surgeon and has appointments scheduled with her primary care provider, neurologist, ocular plastic surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, and cosmetic dentist, according to the update.

“Despite the long road ahead for her, this could have been completely different and I’m so grateful to have her here, alive and her brain in working order,” Zoe Rose, Fairhurst’s mother, said in the most recent GoFundMe update. “Her face can be fixed, her wounds will heal, bones can be repaired. She has the strength to overcome all of this.”

Fairhurst suffered facial injuries, a brain bleed, and multiple broken bones during the accident and was sent to a local hospital in Krabi to undergo surgery. She transferred to a facility in Bangkok before returning home, according to the GoFundMe.

Rose and Fairhurst’s brother, J, arrived in Thailand after the accident and helped her navigate her care, which was made difficult when her passport was lost, according to the page.

The GoFundMe has raised over $61,000, close to its goal of $65,000.

“I would definitely like to heal quickly and be able to get back to work and see my coworkers and my friends and take care of my patients,” Fairhurst told Boston 25 News. “But I know I need to be able to pour from a full cup, and if my cup isn’t full, I can’t help anybody else.”
