An 83-year-old Middleborough woman was found dead Thursday after an extensive search by multiple agencies, officials said.
The woman, who was not identified, was determined missing the morning of March 27 when a neighbor requested a welfare check, according to a statement from the Middleborough Police Department.
Multiple agencies — including Middleborough police, Middleborough fire, the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, Plymouth County sheriff’s office, Massachusetts State Police, Massachusetts Environmental Police, and the Department of Conservation & Recreation — thoroughly searched the area, according to the statement.
A K9 police unit located the woman in a shallow body of water in the woods Thursday afternoon, according to the statement.
“It’s always a sad ending when a member of our community goes missing and does not survive, despite the best efforts of dozens of first responders,” Police Chief Robert Ferreira said in the statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time and ask everyone to please respect their privacy while they grieve.”
While foul play is not suspected, the death is under investigation by Middleborough police and the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office.
