The fox that attacked a young boy and two dogs in Dedham on Sunday and Monday tested positive for rabies, according to the Dedham Animal Control Officer.
Rabies is a severe disease that can be treated with the prompt administration of rabies antibodies and vaccine after exposure, officials said.
Anyone exposed to the fox’s saliva through a bite, scratch, or fresh wound or through contact with fox saliva to their eyes, nose, or mouth has a high risk of exposure, the statement added.
The Animal Control Officer said that pet owners who have encountered the fox in the area of Sandy Valley Road should contact their veterinarian, as they may need a booster rabies vaccination.
The 9-year-old boy told 7News that he was playing basketball when the fox attacked him.
“It hurt very bad,” he told the news channel while showing off his bruises and cuts sustained during the fight.
“It came at me,” the boy said. “Tried to fight it off.”
He added, “Got me good.”
