A fire in North Adams on Tuesday night claimed the life of a 4-year-old child, and one earlier in the day in Chicopee left an adult dead.
The North Adams fire broke out in a two-family home at 188-190 West Shaft Road, according to a statement from the Berkshire District Attorney’s Office.
Firefighters responded at around 11:46 p.m. and, upon arrival, found the structure fully engulfed in flames.
Five people, two with serious injuries, were found outside of the home, and they informed firefighters that the 4-year-old was still inside, according to the statement. Firefighters found the child dead in the residence.
Firefighters fought the blaze into Wednesday morning, taking about an hour-and-a-half to contain most of the fire.
The residents were transported to North Adams Regional Hospital, with the two individuals with severe injuries — an adult and a child — transferred to Massachusetts General Hospital.
“On behalf of the North Adams Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the family that lost a loved one and their home,” North Adams Fire Chief Brent Lefebvre said in a statement. “This is a terrible loss for them and our community.”
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
Earlier in the day, Chicopee firefighters responded to a fire at a five-unit residence on the corner of Artisan and Chicopee streets before 4 p.m., according to a statement from Chicopee’s fire and police departments.
Seven occupants safely escaped, but one person was still inside, according to the statement. As firefighters fought the blaze and kept it from spreading, the adult was located deceased.
“Our hearts go out to the family that lost a loved one today,” Fire Chief Daniel Stamborski said in the statement.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of the person’s death, according to the statement.
