An off-duty Worcester police officer was involved in a physical altercation at a girls soccer game in Northborough earlier this month. He faces a charge of assault and battery, and an investigation is underway.
The officer’s name has not been released. A Worcester Police Department spokesperson confirmed his involvement and said that he was placed on administrative leave.
The incident occurred on March 1 at about 6 p.m. inside Teamworks, a recreation center that hosts a variety of sporting events, including children’s soccer.
The Northborough Police Department was called for a report of a fight on the field, the department said in a release. The altercation took place between a parent of one of the players and a coach on the opposing team.
The parent was only identified as a 36-year-old West Boylston man. Worcester officials later confirmed he is an officer there.
He was issued a summons to appear in Westborough District Court. Northborough police said that he will be identified once he is arraigned there.
When that arraignment will happen is unclear. None of the arraignments listed on Monday’s daily list report are related to this incident. The clerk’s office said that it could not look up when an arraignment will take place without the defendant’s name.
Security footage obtained by WCVB shows one man crossing the field and grabbing another by the front of his shirt before the two are brought to the ground and separated by a referee and others.
