A human body caught in fishing nets 40 miles off the Massachusetts coast last week had been embalmed and appeared consistent with a burial at sea, authorities said Monday.
The state’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the body belonged to a woman in her 60s who had numerous cancerous tumors, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said in an update.
The fishing vessel first reported the grisly discovery Friday, the office previously said. Massachusetts State Police investigators and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene, sending the woman’s wrapped and decomposing body off for an autopsy.
The medical examiner determined there were no indications of foul play, and that the woman was unlikely to be identified, according to the DA’s office.
“We consider this matter non-suspicious and closed,” the office said.
