No bail for Avon man accused of killing mother, police say they found bloody carving knife at the scene

Thadeus Joseph, 22, is charged with murdering his 55-year-old mother, Astrid Joseph.

A 22-year-old Avon man was ordered held without bail Wednesday after being arraigned on a murder charge in the death of his mother

Thadeus Joseph pleaded not guilty to killing his mother, 55-year-old Astrid Joseph, in their Avon home. Astrid Joseph’s body was found by her husband Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

According to a statement of facts filed in court, police responded to the home around 4:22 p.m. Tuesday for a call reporting a possible sudden death or suicide. At the home, responding officers found the woman facedown in the kitchen, a pool of blood near her head with a bloodied carving knife near her body.

There was blood elsewhere in the kitchen and another knife was on the floor, according to the statement of facts.

Yvel Joseph, Astrid’s husband, told police that Thadeus Joseph is their oldest child and that over the weekend, the 22-year-old told his parents he was dealing with mental health issues, including anxiety and having feelings of self harm. According to court filings, Yvel said his son told them he was “going through some stuff” and on Tuesday morning, he allegedly told his parents he was taking the day off for his mental health, as well as the rest of the week.

Yvel Joseph told police around noon he got a call from his wife while he was at work.

“Yvel said it sounded as if his son was holding the phone,” the police statement of facts reads. “Thadeus was saying, ‘I have your phone.’ Yvel also heard Astrid say, ‘I am your mother, give me the phone.’ At that point the call disconnected. Yvel stated that Astrid sounded concerned.”

When he tried calling his wife and son back several times over the next hour, there was no answer. Yvel left work in Dorchester, and when he reached the Avon home, he allegedly found the family’s white Nissan missing and his wife’s body in the kitchen, according to court records.

Thadeus Joseph was later arrested at the South Shore Plaza in Braintree. During his booking, he allegedly told officers, “This is so funny. All I had to do was kill my mom, and then this is it,” according to court filings.

During his arraignment on Wednesday at Stoughton District Court, Thadeus Joseph was ordered held without bail. An attorney representing him did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
