Gov. Maura Healey is putting a new focus on high-profile national media appearances as she works to respond to the Trump administration and lay the groundwork for a reelection bid next year.
On Wednesday, Healey will appear as a guest on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” The same episode will also feature Massachusetts native Mindy Kaling.

Healey’s late night appearance comes on the heels of her in-depth interview with The New York Times, which was published on Saturday. In that wide-ranging conversation, she said that President Trump “thinks he’s king,” criticized the Democratic Party’s national brand, defended diversity policies, and spoke about the impact of the migrant crisis in Massachusetts.
Healey said last month that she plans to seek a second term.
“When Kim [Driscoll] and I started, we laid out in our inaugural address things that we wanted to do. We wanted to get after housing, we wanted to get after transportation, we wanted to cut taxes, we wanted to make investments in education. And I feel like we’ve done all those things. Yet, there’s a heck of a lot more to do,” she said during an appearance on GBH’s “Boston Public Radio.”
While that race is still far away, Healey appears to already have at least one potential challenger. Andrea James, an advocate for incarcerated women, recently submitted paperwork that marks the first steps towards running for governor, The Boston Globe reported.
Mike Kennealy, a former state secretary of Housing and Economic Development during the Baker administration, is weighing a run against Healey, he told the Globe. State Sen. Peter Durant of Spencer is also considering jumping into the race, WBUR reported.
Healey currently holds a 52% overall approval rating, according to a recent UMass/WCVB poll. On an issue-by-issue basis, Healey got high marks for the way she has handled reproductive rights, education, and crime. Healey’s work on housing and her response to the migrant crisis are serious liabilities at the moment, however.
“Late Night with Seth Meyers” airs weeknights at 12:35 a.m. on NBC.
