FedEx driver rescued by boat after being trapped by high tide on Cape Cod

"We are thankful for the quick actions of the first responders who assisted our driver.”

Wellfleet Fire Department

The driver of a FedEx truck was rescued by firefighters when his truck was caught in rising waters off Cape Cod Saturday, officials said.

Crews from the Wellfleet Fire Department reported to the submerged delivery truck around 11:33 a.m. Saturday. Using a rescue boat, crews reached the driver, who was transported to shore by noon, according to the department.

The driver was uninjured and evaluated by EMS when on land, Wellfleet Fire said.

FedEx said in a statement that the packages were collected and examined for damages, and the company will contact affected customers. All of the undamaged packages have been delivered, a spokesperson said Sunday evening.

“We are grateful there were no serious injuries as a result of the incident in Wellfleet, Mass,” the spokesperson said. “We are thankful for the quick actions of the first responders who assisted our driver.”

The driver was traveling on Lieutenant Island Road when the tide began to rapidly rise and submerge the vehicle, the department said. Wellfleet Fire called on residents to be cautious during high tide on that road, which travels along Loagy Bay to Lieutenant Island in Wellfleet.

“Rising tides can create hazardous conditions and pose significant risks to motorists,” the department said in a release.
