A Delta Air Lines flight heading for New Orleans returned to Logan International Airport shortly after departing due to a “smoky odor” in the cabin Sunday morning, the airline said.
Delta Flight 1398 took off Sunday with 87 passengers, three flight attendants, and two pilots, according to a spokesperson for Delta. The flight was scheduled for 8:55 a.m. and was set to arrive in Louisiana around noon.
“Delta flight 1398 returned to Boston shortly after takeoff after a smoky odor was detected in the cabin,” Delta’s statement said. “Our flight crew followed established procedures and returned to Boston safely. We sincerely apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels.”
The major airline company did not elaborate on the cause of the smell or if there was smoke in the cabin.
The spokesperson said Delta declared the incident an emergency to get priority from air traffic control. Emergency response personnel met the plane when it landed, per protocol, Delta said.
According to its online flight status, the flight was delayed to 6 p.m.
A spokesperson for MassPort, which manages Logan, said the “aircraft landed without incident.”
