The game company behind the iconic board is set to launch Monopoly: Boston Edition this year and is asking Bostonians to pitch in to help set the stops on the board.
The Boston Edition is aiming to pay homage to the city by replacing the original layout with popular attractions. Chance and Community Chest cards as well as money will be tweaked to represent the Massachusetts capital.
Mr. Monopoly was spotted across the city in February checking out Boston stops, but manufacturer Top Trumps USA is asking for public input.
Businesses and nonprofits have the opportunity to become a part of the Boston board via submissions.
“Boston is such a unique community with a rich history. We aim to ensure that MONOPOLY: Boston Edition is an accurate portrayal of what Boston locals and tourists love about this charming city, from the iconic Fenway Park to historic Boston landmarks,” said John Marano, a Top Trumps representative.
Boston Monopoly plans to launch in November 2025 and will be available to purchase in-person and online at select local Boston retailers, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon.
Monopoly has been a household staple since 1935. While the original board is a classic family setup, it has been reimagined to fit more than 300 different themes and places in its 90 years, according to the release.
Monopoly actually has Boston roots. A company called The Parker Brothers, originally based in Salem, owned the rights to its precursors. In 1903, Elizabeth Magie, a feminist, patented the first version of a game that is thought to be the first Monopoly called The Landlord’s Game. A few years later, game developer Charles Darrow made his own version that gained widespread success. The Parker Brothers sorted through the patents and began selling Monopoly in the 1930s.
The Parker Brothers distributed the game primarily to Boston retailers, according to the New England Historical Society. Monopoly became a hit for the company that was acquired by Hasbro in the 1990s.
Monopoly editions depicting Boston have existed before, but never permanently. One Boston Monopoly board in 1994 was not licensed through Hasbro or connected to them. This is the first official Hasbro Monopoly: Boston Edition and will have a national rollout, according to a spokesperson.
