A rideshare driver has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a passenger in South Boston over the weekend.
The driver, Hermann Ngoufack Jiokeng, 39, of Brighton, picked up the passenger around 11:45 p.m. on Saturday from a location in South Boston, Boston Police said. The passenger, who has not been named, was traveling to their residence.
“During the ride, the suspect, who was the ride share driver, sexually assaulted the victim,” police said in a statement.
Boston Police officers arrested Jiokeng at his residence in Brighton and charged him with rape. After being ordered held without bail Friday, he pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday morning, the Boston Globe reported.
Uber said it banned the driver from the platform as soon as the incident was reported.
“We are sickened by what has been reported,” an Uber spokesperson said in a statement to Boston.com. “We’ve been in touch with police and will continue to do whatever we can to support their investigation.”
The incident remains under investigation, and police urged anyone with information to contact the Sexual Assault Unit at 617-343-4400.
