Federal workers and university researchers rallied in Boston on Wednesday to oppose the White House’s cuts to the federal government.

The Boston protest was one of many across the country where protesters declared their objection to the thousands of reported federal government employees laid off by the White House and its Department of Government Efficiency. While marching from the John F. Kennedy Federal Building to the O’Neill Federal Building in Boston, protesters also denounced proposed funding cuts that could impact colleges and universities.

United States Representative Ayanna Pressley attended the demonstration and offered her support.

“They have taken a wrecking ball to the entire infrastructure of our federal government,” Pressley told Boston 25. “I’m here to tell this billionaire who’s sewing chaos, advancing cruelty and operating with corruption to take his foot off the necks of working people.”

Employees at agencies across the government have been affected by the firings, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, Education Department, Energy Department, and the Department of Health and Human Services, according to the AP

Trump’s administration and Elon Musk have insisted that only low-performing and probationary employees are being targeted, but a CNN investigation found that the dismissals appear to be “far more arbitrary.”
