Carlisle police said in a statement on Wednesday afternoon that the owner of the dog believed to have initiated the fatal attack on another dog on the Towle Field trails over the weekend has been located.
“The dog owner is fully cooperating with police investigations, and some initial miscommunication has been clarified during the investigation indicating no malicious intent on the part of the person(s) involved,” police said.
Police said they were notified on Saturday afternoon that the incident happened earlier in the day on the Towle Field trails near Westford Street. A 6-year-old Maltese was allegedly off its leash when a larger, white dog with a brown patch around its eye approached and “severely” bit the Maltese, police said. The small dog was rushed to a local veterinarian for treatment but had to be euthanized because of its injuries.
Manuela Toro, owner of the Maltese named Tuti, told WCVB the larger dog was not leashed.
“The dog came out of nowhere and just jumped onto her,” Toro told the station. “My dad helped relieve the situation and picked her up and went with her to the hospital.”
