Brookline police dealt with an “unusual call” Monday morning after a person brought what they suspected to be a live grenade into the station, the department said.
A person brought a device resembling a grenade into the Brookline Police Department lobby, Brookline police said in a Facebook post.
The Cambridge Police Bomb Squad arrived on the scene to investigate and secure the item, according to police. A section of Washington Street in front of the station was temporarily closed before bomb technicians responded, police said.
After checking the item over and contacting the owner, police determined that the item was an “inert” replica grenade that was purchased at an Army and Navy store.
Brookline police reminded the public that they should not try to handle potentially dangerous items on their own.
“If you encounter an item that you think might possibly be dangerous, please leave the item in place and give us a call. Best not to touch it or move it,” police said in the post. “Please do not bring a dangerous item to a police or fire station; let us come to you.”
