A Milford shoe store unknowingly sold counterfeit products, a police investigation found, with officers seizing over 1,200 items.
Family Sneaker House in Milford sold fake sneakers, backpacks, and other clothing items that were purchased from a Chinese distributor via wire transfer, according to a statement from the Milford Police Department. Milford police officers seized products that, if real, were worth over $200,000.
“While this was not a traditional crime indicative of our community, it’s important to realize these types of operations are not just taking billions away from these big corporations but more importantly, money out of the wallets of hard-working people,” Police Chief Robert Tusino said in the statement.
Milford police started its investigation into Family Sneaker House in December after several customers reported fake shoes and clothing items sold at the store. The products sold were from Nike, Puma, Adidas, Reebok, New Balance, and Yeezy, said Milford officer Kevin O’Loughlin.
Andrea Powers, president of Powers & Associates, wrote a letter to the Milford Police Department on behalf of Nike, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Adidas and “personally praised” the detectives’ efforts, according to the statement.
The companies did not press any charges against the shoe store owner.
O’Loughlin said customers can determine if a product is counterfeit if the material feels cheap, the tag and logo are out of place, and the stitching color does not match the product color.
