76-year-old, 2 police officers hospitalized after potential carbon monoxide incident on Cape Cod

Police said a gas generator in a garage and inadequate ventilation are believed to have contributed to the incident in Bourne.

A 76-year-old man suffered potentially life-threatening injuries and two police officers were hospitalized following an apparent incident of carbon monoxide exposure at a Cape Cod home on Monday morning, police said.

Officers responded to a rescue call at a home on Kayajan Avenue around 10:49 a.m. along with Bourne Fire and Rescue, Bourne police said. At the scene, first responders found an unresponsive 76-year-old man, who was taken to a regional trauma center with injuries that were possibly life-threatening.

Two Bourne police officers were also taken to local hospitals for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening following the incident, the department said.

Officers at the home found equipment, including a gas generator, in the garage where the incident occurred, according to police.

“It is believed that inadequate ventilation and carbon monoxide are contributing factors to this incident,” police said.

The investigation is continuing into the possible exposure, police said.
