A Boston police detective was arrested and charged with drunk driving after he allegedly crashed into another car on the VFW Parkway in Brookline Jan. 25, according to State Police.

Around 6:50 p.m., State and Brookline police responded to reports of an accident near 425 VFW Parkway, State Police said in a report filed in Brookline District Court.

At the scene, police said, officers found Mark McKeown, 52, of Dedham, an off-duty Boston police detective who had crashed into another car. McKeown appeared to be “highly intoxicated,” the report said.

A witness’ dash cam video showed McKeown’s Jeep “traveling at a high rate of speed” and hitting the siding of a rotary just before rear-ending another vehicle, the report said. No one was injured in the crash, according to the report.

When officers arrived, McKeown was swearing at the other driver and blaming him for the accident, according to the report. Officers noticed that McKeown was slurring his speech and smelled strongly of alcohol.

McKeown stated that he was returning from a Boston Bruins hockey game and admitted that he had five alcoholic drinks, the report said. He initially refused when officers attempted to conduct field sobriety tests and stated “Trooper, do you understand who I am?” according to the report. McKeown agreed to try the tests after being placed in handcuffs.

After allegedly failing several sobriety tests, McKeown began swearing at the officer conducting the tests and stated that “there’s no point in taking the next test,” the report said. McKeown was then arrested and allegedly continued swearing at a state trooper as he was read his Miranda Rights, according to the report.

While being transported for booking, McKeown allegedly denied hitting the other vehicle and claimed that his vehicle was hit, the report said.

McKeown is charged with one count of operating under the influence of liquor, according to the report. He was released without bail and is scheduled for a Feb. 4 arraignment in Brookline District Court, according to court records.

McKeown has been placed on administrative desk duty, and an internal affairs investigation is underway, according to Boston Police Sergeant Detective John Boyle.
