A high school southwest of Boston closed for the day Friday, so that police could investigate a threat made against a student and the school over social media.

Blackstone-Millville Regional School District announced it would close its high school but keep the middle and elementary schools open with increased police presence, according to a joint statement from Superintendent Jason DeFalco and Blackstone Police Chief Gregory Gilmore.

“Our first and foremost concern is for the safety of our students,” the joint statement said. “This is an extreme step, but it’s taken with your children in mind. We will provide updates as the investigation continues.”

The Millville Police Department received a report Thursday night from a student, who said a threat was made against both them and their high school over social media. The Millville and Blackstone police departments quickly launched an investigation.

Officials said the threat did not appear to be credible, but they closed the high school “out of an abundance of caution” to allow the police departments to continue the investigation.

Boston.com reached out to the Blackstone and Millville police departments for additional details. No further information was immediately available.
