An 18-month-old child suffered severe burns at a migrant shelter on Tuesday night, officials say.

A hot liquid left some first and second degree burns on the toddler’s face, according to Peabody Fire Chief Jay Dowling.

The incident occurred at the Holiday Inn in Peabody which has been repurposed to house migrants, Dowling said.

Because of a language barrier, Dowling said responders were unsure of the type of liquid that caused the injuries.

The child was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, authorities said. Her current condition was not made public.

The incident remains under investigation.
