A section of Route 1A in East Boston fully reopened Tuesday evening after closing Monday morning due to a bus crash that knocked down power lines and left two people injured.
The crash occurred just after 5:30 a.m. at 175 McClellan Highway, according to a report from Boston police. One witness told officers that he saw an Academy tour bus heading in the direction of the Sumner Tunnel drift onto the sidewalk and strike a utility pole, causing it to fall, the report said.
The bus then allegedly struck the witness’ vehicle while attempting to get back on the highway, causing the vehicle to hit the center guardrail and sustained damage, according to the report.
Another witness told officers that his vehicle was struck by a piece of the utility pole as it fell, damaging the windshield and passenger side of the vehicle, the report said.
There were 19 passengers on the bus, including the driver, according to police. The bus driver and one passenger suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital.
McClellan Highway was shut down in both directions following the crash due to north and southbound lanes being blocked by the fallen utility pole, along with live electric lines and other wires, police said.
Eversource responded to the scene and assessed the situation later that morning.

Officers cited the bus driver with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stay within marked lanes, according to Sergeant Detective John Boyle. The officer who investigated the crash also sought to have the bus driver’s license suspended, Boyle said.
At around 1:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon, the northbound lanes were reopened, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Southbound traffic continued to be detoured at Boardman Street, police said in an X post.
East Boston Traffic update: McClellan Highway will remain closed at Boardman St tonight and tomorrow in the direction of the Sumner and Ted Williams Tunnels as well as Logan International Airport. This will impact the morning commute on Tuesday. Please seek an alternate route.

By Tuesday evening, the southbound lanes had been fully reopened, and all traffic was able to proceed as usual.
“Academy Express is working with state police and the BPD as they conduct an investigation into the accident,” Academy Express LLC said in a statement obtained by Boston 25 News.
The crash remains an active investigation, police said.
