A 66-year-old Westfield man died Friday morning after a workplace accident in Greenfield, authorities said.

The Greenfield Fire Department was called to an incident at Cleveland Street at around 8:54 a.m. With a concerted effort from multiple agencies, the fire department determined at 10:15 a.m. that “the rescue has been turned into a recovery effort,” according to a statement from the department.

The man’s body was recovered at approximately 4:30 p.m., according to a statement from the Northwestern District Attorney’s office.

Co-workers said they saw the man climb to the top of a silo tower — located at a site for a Chicopee-based concrete company to mix dry ingredients used to make cement — and noticed he seemed to be missing and did not return radio calls, according to the statement. It was presumed the man had fallen into the silo.
