A section of Route 1A in East Boston remains closed Tuesday morning, one day after a bus crashed into a utility pole on the highway before dawn, knocking down power lines and injuring two people.
Boston police responded to the crash at 175 McClellan Highway around 5:41 a.m. Monday, according to a police report. Witnesses told officers that an Academy bus heading in the direction of the Sumner Tunnel drifted onto the sidewalk and struck a utility pole. The bus then allegedly struck another vehicle as it returned to the roadway, and the utility pole fell, causing damage to another car as it toppled.
According to police, the bus was carrying 19 people, including its driver. The bus driver and one of the passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Live electric lines and other wires were strewn across the north and southbound lanes of the highway following the crash, according to police. Traffic was diverted into East Boston neighborhoods through Monday.
Eversource responded to the scene, and traffic in both directions was shut down.

The northbound lanes were reopened by around 1:30 p.m, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, but police warned that inbound/southbound traffic would remain closed through the evening and into Tuesday’s morning commute.
Route 1A southbound traffic is being detoured at Boardman Street, according to a MassDOT advisory. The agency urged drivers heading to Boston Logan International Airport to plan for extra travel time.
East Boston Traffic update: McClellan Highway will remain closed at Boardman St tonight and tomorrow in the direction of the Sumner and Ted Williams Tunnels as well as Logan International Airport. This will impact the morning commute on Tuesday. Please seek an alternate route.
