Police: Winthrop man charged with OUI after crashing into cruiser

The officer inside the cruiser was taken to an area hospital with injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening.

Winthrop police say a man was allegedly driving drunk when he crashed into a police cruiser Wednesday night.

Joseph Clemens, 22, of Winthrop, has been charged with operating under the influence, among other violations, according to police

On Wednesday around 5:44 p.m., police say a Winthrop officer, operating in a marked police cruiser on Veterans Road, was struck head-on by a Ram 1500 pickup truck.

The pickup truck had completely crossed marked center lines and was on the wrong side of the road at the time of the incident, according to officials.

The officer inside the cruiser was taken to an area hospital with injuries that are believed to be non-life-threatening.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene with significant front-end damage, according to police.
