Taxi driver in Somerville says he unknowingly acted as getaway car for bank robbery suspect

“Normally, we don't see taxi drivers getting roped into an armed robbery.”

A taxi driver found himself unintentionally assisting with a bank robbery in Somerville on Wednesday, officials say.

The suspect allegedly got into the taxi near Porter Square in Cambridge and requested that the driver make a stop at the East Cambridge Savings Bank located at 285 Highland Ave., police said.

“The taxi driver just basically said he had no idea what’s going on,” patrolman Thomas Lambert, one of the responding officers, told Boston.com.

At 12:47 p.m., Somerville Police responded to a call for a robbery at the bank. Authorities located and stopped the car near Davis Square, about five blocks from where the robbery took place.

The suspect is scheduled to be arraigned in Somerville District Court on Thursday.
